Jacking in to the History of Sexy Robot Girls

Fritz Lang and Thea von Harbou didn’t know what they were doing when they wrote Metropolis. They had no idea that their landmark piece of science fiction cinema would create one of the biggest, most popular fetishes in the world. But with the creation of Maria – a machine woman with human flesh and blonde hair – Metropolis ushered in the advent of sexy robot ladies as we know and love them today. Now in the public domain (translation: you can watch it free!), it’s probably the most important movie for understanding why android ladies caught on the way they did.
If you want proof, look no further than games like Booty Calls. Even though C.A.R.A. looks a little more kawaii than a German expressionist movie from the 1920s, Maria’s DNA is in each and every one of her mechanical seams. You can see Lang’s fever dream of a curvy, voluptuous computer in her design. Each and every mech girl today, whether you know it or not, has roots in this film.
But C.A.R.A is also very much influenced by another trend: robot maids. Very specifically popularized in early 2000s fan-favorite characters like Mahoro, android servants became a dominant otaku fetish for a good decade in anime – specifically mech anime! Dating simulators, too, loved to toy around with the concept of falling in love with robo-girls. Something felt special about connecting with something that had been told it was incapable of love. Dating sims resonated with people who also felt unloved – specifically otaku, often shunned by society.
Great example of the types of android girls otaku are in love with can be seen in Project QT – one of the flagship titles on Nutaku. XDNA’s blockbuster hentai experience is a love letter to all things anime, and a big part of that can be seen in its robust cast of lusty humans, monsters, and – of course – robots. Elva is a classic anime trope in all the best ways, with much of her arc built on her trying to understand human emotion and intimacy. Designed to anime fan tastes, she’s everything a sexy robot lover could want and more.
Unless, of course, you’re more into the science fiction aspect of robot girls. Not so much the girls themselves, but the world they’re in and why they’re in it. Isaac Asimov laid the “foundation” for this type of storytelling with his landmark I, Robot, among many others. And in the ‘80s, a certain movie that would “come back” a few too many really cemented this type of storytelling at the box office. These stories eventually siphoned through to eventual otaku audiences through Osamu Tezuka – the God of Manga himself – who was deeply influenced by both Asimov and visual imagery from Metropolis! And without the two of them, we wouldn’t have had the cyberpunk boom of the 1980s. You don’t get to cyberpunk sex workers without the Three Laws, folks!
But we can’t talk about “sexy robots” without talking about, arguably, the eternal king of them all: Hajime Sorayama. Also known as the designer of the AIBO (no – really), Sorayama perfected the visage of the quintessential voluptuous robot lady in his multi-decade career. He’s worked with big-name companies, and even bands like Aerosmith. His work was even adapted as a memorable and fun 1980s OVA called The Humanoid, which centered on the love between a young spacefarer and a curious, beautiful, deadly android. It’s out of print now, but it’s nevertheless an important early work in the “robot girls falling in love” canon!
Operation Black-Ark X features robot girls that tap into this lineage of storytelling, too. Sci fi games have evolved so much over the decades that, these days, there’s a lot of mixing and matching of genres. Do you want a fluffy and cute dating sim with a robot companion? Those exist. But if you want to date a girl, fight robots, have crazy-hot and unhinged hentai sex, and get embroiled in intergalactic conflict? You can!
Sexy Space Airlines is a great example of this trend. Way more than a sequel or expansion to the original, it’s a full-fledged sci-fi opus told from the perspective of a thawed-out pilot. Through each girl, you learn more about the world you’ve awoken in, and how you might find your place in it. Androids are a regular staple in the cast, and through them, you learn more about the cruel utility use femme robots have been treated to. As the captain, you teach them intimacy and to love their sexuality as you bond with them – learning together the whole way.
Android ladies caught your eye? One of our favorites is M.I.A. from Fap CEO. M.I.A. stands for Modular Interfacing Assistant and we're hot for it. Nothing gets us quite as hot and bothered as "modular" and "interfacing" in the same sentance. In FapCEO you play a CEO running the largest porn company in the world (well... you'll get there with time!). M.I.A. was given as a gift to the CEO by Dalla, there is very little common about this specific android unit, except that she likes exploring human behavior and hates conflicting protocols and syntax errors! Modified to aid in sample collection and analysis for Zan'osi scientists, M.I.A. possesses a very human-like trait: Curiosity. It might spell disaster. It might also be what makes her the most profitable girl in the company.
