In essence, elves originated in the Dark Ages and Mediaeval time periods.With an origin from references in Germanic mythology and folklore, we also find them in ancient Nordic tales and poems. The common denominator in those days was that elves were human like supernatural beings and they were considered real. As real as you or me!

Let’s take a moment to pause here and mention that scientifically, elves are not considered real beings (can you believe it?). That being said, for a lot of people back then (and to this day) elves were and are believed to be real… so depending on who you are, you may agree or disagree with that. Either way it’s cool with us!

In ancient Mediaeval German-speaking cultures, elves were considered powerfully magical creatures of beauty and were entirely nonthreatening to everyday folk. Beowulf mentions elves in a way that refers to them with a word that would only be used to describe an existing group of people, so maybe they were real back then?

You might even find them being referred to as relics of a forgotten time.

RPG elves include elves who cannot be trusted, they might sell you some bad shit or lead you right into a trap. A good example is the Blood Elves from World of Warcraft, an MMORPG. These arcane magic addicted Blood Elves, as led by Lor'themar Theron, were once good natured but their brutal history of suffering and near annihilation have turned them wicked. 

Drow (or Dark Elves) were imagined and referenced in the 1977 1st edition of Dungeons and Dragons. Drow are bad news for everyone! Maybe these are the elves that the Norse feared, Dark Elves can also be found in the Elder Scroll games such as Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim. Trust them at your own expense as they also often carry the title of thieves and assassins. 

The Elves of Japanese Culture, Manga, and Anime

Erofu. This is a combination of two words in Japan, which words you might ask?
