Characters like Aisha Clan-Clan, Kaola Su, and Mihoshi became beloved favorites among tan stans and garden variety otaku alike. Each one of these characters, too, is depicted with a tanline at some point during their respective shows. Could they be the ‘patient zero’ of the otaku tanline fixation?

Whatever the case may be, these designs coincided with another huge trend among young adult Japanese women: ganguro. Girls in the ganguro subculture bleach their hair in loud colors, decorate their faces with extreme make-up looks, and – most prominently – tan their skins to alarmingly dark colors. This would eventually lead to less elaborate, but still sun-kissed varieties like kogals. Japanese women tanning their skin became so popular that both porn companies and hentai artists alike were quick to capitalize on the trend.

Rise of Tanlines Into Mainstream Media

Into the 2010s, tanning fetishes splashed into the mainstream.
