Yuri has roots in popular Japanese literature. In the early 20th century, Class S literature normalized attraction and romantic yearning between young women. While this wasn’t often explicitly gay, it paved the way for later generations to build off what came before.

Throughout the 70s, popular shojo manga – arguably the evolution of Class S literature – doubled down on the same-sex storytelling. Creators got a little bolder with depictions of sapphic queerness, taking advantage of the fact that same-sex attraction between younger women in Japan is seen as normal and non-threatening. Being interested in girls has been seen as a sign of immaturity – a problematic concept – and it’s because of this that creators were able to “get away with” things American comic artists wouldn’t dream of.

These days, though, yuri doesn’t have to be coded. Yuri has exploded in popularity since mainstream opinions on queerness have evolved.
